Ladakh and Zanskar are parts of the Indian federal state Jammu & Kashmir at the north-western frontier of the Indian Union. Capital of Jammu & Kashmir is Srinagar.

The population of Ladakh and Zanskar belongs for the most part to the Buddhist minority of the federal state Jammu & Kashmir. Language and culture of the Ladakhi and Zanskari people are deeply influenced by adjacent Tibet.

The village Raru is located 220 km south of the Indian-Pakistani frontier town Kargil on an altitude of about 4000 ms. The 20 houses of the village are built near the river Zanskar.


The only for vehicles suitable road which connects Zanskar with the world outside ends in Raru. Remaining villages until the pass of Shingo-La (5200m) can be reached only by walking, with donkeys or ponies.
